Deregistering a car: which documents?

You can take your vehicle off the road. This is typically the case if:

  • You intend to sell the vehicle
  • You want to stop using the vehicle temporarily
  • You want to have the vehicle scrapped

To deregister your old car, you need:

  • Registration certificate part I
  • Number plates
  • If applicable, proof of disposal if the vehicle is scrapped by a certified dismantling company.

The registration office automatically informs the main customs office and the insurer
that the vehicle has been deregistered. After deregistering the vehicle, you may still use the unstamped number plates for return trips, for example back home, until the end of the day – provided the insurance is still valid.

Can I keep my old number plate?

After deregistering your vehicle, you have the option of reserving the plate
combination for a limited period and then using it for your new vehicle.
You state this reservation request when deregistering. The duration varies by registration district, but three to twelve months is usually possible.
