LOST DOCUMENTS
If you have lost your vehicle registration certificate (Fahrzeugschein) or it has been stolen, you must apply for a new one immediately. As a rule, the following documents are required for a new application for the vehicle registration certificate part 1:
- Valid original ID document, identity card or passport (with registration certificate)
- Proof of a valid main inspection (HU) according to § 29 StVZO
- Presentation of the test report from the last main inspection
- Vehicle registration certificate part II (vehicle title)
If your vehicle is financed and the registration certificate part II is held by a finance provider, it must be sent to the registration authority together with a declaration of consent for the issuance of a replacement registration certificate part I. The new document can only be issued after the registration certificate part II has been received. - Affidavit
If the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document) is lost, the vehicle owner must submit an affidavit at the registration authority. The required affidavit can be recorded in writing at the registration authority. Alternatively, the affidavit can also be taken by a notary and must be submitted in original. - Police theft report
In case of theft of the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document), the police theft report must be submitted.
Loss abroad
The vehicle registration document must also be carried in the vehicle when traveling abroad. If it is lost or stolen there, you are obliged to report the loss to the local police. Have a police confirmation issued – you will need this for a possible vehicle inspection and for the new application of the registration document. A replacement for the document can only be obtained from the responsible vehicle registration authority in Germany.
If your vehicle registration document is lost, you should not wait long: without a valid registration certificate part I, you may no longer use your vehicle in public road traffic. We support you quickly with the complete replacement procurement – simply get in touch with us, we will tell you exactly which documents you need in your case.
